Beeldbepalend

__Leermens was the legal centre in the region in the Middle Ages. Because of this, there is also a (provincially) well-known saying attached to Leermens: 'Hai is om Leerms kommen', i.e.: he walked around the village (across the still intact ox corridor around the village), with the mocking meaning: 'he has become wise through damage and disgrace'. According to other variants, it is said: 'hai it oet dob drunk, hai it on thick stain zeten' or also (mockingly): 'hai it in aaskedobbe poest.' These expressions refer to the judge who, before speaking right, first walked a lap around the village, then took a sip of water from the dobbe and then took the oath at a large boulder next to the church, the 'Leermster Stain'. The Leermster Stain disappeared in 1906. A boulder from Rolde replaced it in 1974. After years of uncertainty and struggle, the national government gave the green light for the so-called 'village approach' in May '22. I.e. the entire village will be strengthened structurally. There is now a plan to build a series of replacement houses on the outskirts of the village. Together with the active residents' committee, the municipality of Eemsdelta and the National Coordinator for Groningen, work is finally underway on a somewhat more stable future.
